Transition from an outdated Shopify 1.0 theme to the modern Shopify OS 2.0
The Ecoflow.cz online store offers modern energy solutions. To keep pace with the dynamic growth of the brand and the market, the e-shop needed a technological upgrade that would ensure a high-quality user experience and significantly simplify the internal management of the entire website.
The Challenge
The client approached us with a clear problem: the e-shop was running on an outdated theme that did not support the modern Shopify OS 2.0 standard. In practice, this meant the website was inflexible regarding modifications. The client couldn't rearrange page content themselves, quickly add a marketing banner, or edit product details.
Every design change, no matter how small, required a developer's intervention. This significantly slowed the company down and unnecessarily increased the regular operating costs of the e-shop. Therefore, the main goals of the project were:
- To migrate to a new theme with full Shopify 2.0 support.
- To completely configure the theme and improve its visual appearance.
- To implement and test new features without any sales downtime.
The Solution
-
Transition to a new Shopify OS 2.0 theme
As part of the project, we selected and installed a new theme. The modifications included configuring it according to the brand's visual identity, reconstructing the main menu (including images for product lines), and rearranging sections on the homepage. The entire process took place within the existing administration without the need to migrate data.
We utilized a staging environment, which allowed us to smoothly switch the e-shop to the new version without any downtime. The client thus gained access to modern Shopify features without disrupting the website.
-
Shopping cart and checkout optimization
We simplified the shopping cart and added a cart drawer. After adding a product, the customer now immediately sees an overview of their items without having to leave the page. To facilitate purchasing, we added a discount code field directly into the cart so customers wouldn't have to search for it during the actual checkout. We also modified the display of payment methods and renamed "cash on delivery" to a more comprehensible "Payment on delivery".
-
International trade — currencies and Shopify Markets
Slovak customers previously struggled with the currency unintentionally switching to Czech crowns. We successfully resolved this issue by properly configuring Shopify Markets, geolocation, and a currency switcher in the website's header.
However, we also encountered a technical limitation of the platform: the client wanted to implement the reverse charge mechanism for Slovak B2B customers. Since Shopify currently only allows VAT ID verification at checkout, and available third-party apps did not offer a 100% reliable solution, this feature remains open for a future upgrade to a higher Shopify Plus plan.
-
Extending e-shop functionality and customer self-service
We deployed apps to the e-shop that cleverly expand its functionality. We integrated a "back-in-stock notification" solution and a pre-order system. We also added a tool that allows customers to easily and independently cancel their orders. We smoothly connected all these elements to the new theme using app blocks.
-
Improving user experience (UX) across the website
On category pages, we added an "Add to cart" button directly to the product overview, saving customers time. We fixed the non-functional search and improved navigation – clicking on a main category now clearly displays all the products that fall under it. Overall, these adjustments have significantly improved and shortened the path to purchase.

Závěr
The transition to Shopify OS 2.0 gave the client full control over the e-shop back. They no longer need a developer for every minor tweak, and they can now easily manage the website's appearance themselves. Despite certain limitations, we managed to maximize the platform's potential and build a modern, reliable solution. Moreover, the Ecoflow project was a great opportunity for us to test more advanced integrations and advance our own technological know-how.
